May through July is the primary tryout season for competitive youth soccer across the US. Here's what to know heading into the 2026 tryout window.
Who is holding open tryouts
Most competitive clubs hold open tryouts in May-June for U9-U14 and in June-July for older age groups. Elite programs (ECNL, MLS Next, Girls Academy) often have invite-only sessions alongside open days.
What coaches are evaluating
- Technical quality under pressure — first touch, passing accuracy, 1v1 ability
- Soccer IQ — positioning, movement off the ball, decisions in tight spaces
- Attitude and coachability — response to correction, effort level, team-first play
